Holiday Season Self-Care: Practical Tips That Work

As winter solstice approaches, nature invites us to turn inwards — to pause, reflect on the year gone by, and plant seeds for what is to come. Yet this quieter rhythm often collides with the arrival of Christmas — full of expectation, commercial pressure, and family gatherings.

It can feel like two opposing energies. Here are some gentle, practical ways to help you keep calm, stay centred, and find meaning in the season.

Take an active role

  • Create a new tradition that feels right for you.
  • Choose what works best — venue, timing, or catering.
  • Schedule in a walk or some quiet space.
  • Set a positive intention before an event.

Keep perspective

  • Nothing is ever truly personal.
  • You don’t have to join in the drama.
  • Different opinions are allowed.
  • The only thing you can control is your response.

Family gatherings — practical strategies

Do you set out with good intentions for family get-togethers, only to end up frustrated or disappointed? Here are some ways to help you thrive rather than just survive:

  • Be realistic. Enjoy the day without an agenda for “success.”
  • Simplify and prepare in advance. The less pressure on the day, the better.
  • Make a self-care plan. Decide when you’ll rest, step outside, or listen to something uplifting.
  • Look for positives. Reflect on qualities or past positive actions of those who may trigger you.
  • Plan ahead for tricky moments. Take a sheet of paper and make two columns:
    • On the left: challenges, triggers, or patterns likely to arise.
    • On the right: responses that support you — e.g. smile and count to ten, take a long exhale, change the topic, leave the room, or gently reinforce a boundary.

If it doesn’t go to plan, be compassionate with yourself. There is a saying: “If you think you are enlightened, go spend time with your family.” The more realistic you are — and the fewer expectations you place on others — the easier it becomes.

Gentle reflections

  • Are my expectations realistic?
  • Will this still matter in an hour, a day, or a week?

Be kind to yourself

  • Avoid over-committing.
  • Schedule some “me time.”
  • Take a one-minute pause to breathe deeply.
  • Do something that makes you laugh.
  • Acknowledge yourself — getting through the day is often enough.

Simple seasonal treats

  • Self-massage with warm sesame oil. Grounding and calming, it supports sleep. (Choose plain sesame oil, not toasted.) Coconut or Ayurvedic oils are alternatives.
  • Read, watch, or listen — choose an uplifting book, film, or music.
  • Light a candle or use a diffuser.
  • Take a candle-lit bath.
  • Book a yoga or relaxation course to carry you gently into the New Year.
