We are now (end Jan/early Feb) around the midpoint between Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. The darkest weeks are behind us — and even with snow and rain possible, the light is returning. A little more brightness in the mornings. Dusk arriving a few minutes later each day.
This season draws us toward the still point — a threshold time, when nature is quietly preparing beneath the surface.
In the natural world, this time of year has a name: the hungry gap.
A couple of generations ago, there simply wasn’t the constant choice we have now. Winter meant eating more simply. And when we consume less, the body often has more space for clearing, repair, and quiet regeneration.
The body responds wisely
When there’s less coming in, the system often begins to clear what’s been held. What rises first may not be “motivation” or productivity.
Sometimes it’s emotion. Sensitivity. Old feelings. A heaviness you didn’t know you were carrying.
Not because anything is wrong — but because it’s finally possible to feel what we couldn’t feel when life was full.
The gap — where healing begins
This is a time to be with the gap — between words, doing and speaking.
To notice what it’s like to allow a pause before responding.
Before you answer, can you feel whether it’s a yes… or a no?
Movement and sound — without force
This is a time to let your inner world take centre stage — to let movement come from within, with no structure or form required. Like a dog when it wakes — that full-body stretch, the yawn, the slow shake. The body resetting itself without needing a plan.
And alongside movement, sound can be just as powerful.
An exhale.
A hum.
A soft tone that releases the throat and settles the chest.
Because when we include sound, we begin to move and sound ourselves back into wholeness.
Let the deep wisdom within set the pace
Because the root of healing is listening deeply enough that wholeness can begin to re-form. Sometimes pushing forward is a way of not feeling what’s here.
A small pause can make a difference — and over time, you begin to hear the subtle messages your body has been sending all along.
If you pause for a moment now, notice where this lands in your body — the breath, the chest, the belly, the ground beneath you.
And if you’re curious about the wider seasonal threshold this sits within — the first light of spring, and what may be quietly stirring — you may enjoy my Imbolc reflection.
