Yoga Therapy for Back Care & Spinal Health

Back pain can affect how you move, rest, work, and even how safe you feel in your body. It may show up as stiffness on waking, discomfort after sitting or standing, recurring flare-ups, or a sense of caution around bending, lifting, and everyday movement.

Yoga therapy meets you here with sensitive, adaptive practices to ease tension, rebuild steadiness, and help you feel more at home in your body again — without forcing or pushing through pain.

Common back challenges you may be facing

  • Stiffness or pain after sitting, standing, or walking for a while
  • Flare-ups that feel unpredictable, often linked with stress, fatigue, or posture
  • Tension held in the lower back, mid-spine, shoulders, or neck
  • Sleep disrupted by discomfort or difficulty settling
  • Loss of confidence in movement or fear of making things worse

Why spinal health matters in daily life

Your spine influences posture, breath, balance, and nervous-system regulation — all of which shape how you move through daily life. When the back is supported, the breath is freer, the body is steadier, and it can become easier to rest, recover, and respond to life with more ease.

How yoga therapy can support you in times of back pain

This work is gentle, breath-led, and responsive to you. We focus on what your body needs today — reducing strain, improving movement habits, and building supportive strength and stability over time.

  • Adaptive practice: Movement is adapted to you — not the other way around.
  • Breath-led movement: Coordinating breath and movement supports healthy spinal mechanics and helps calm the mind.
  • Nervous-system care: Trauma-aware guidance prioritises safety, pacing, and grounding.
  • Whole-person support: Movement, breath, relaxation, and (if you choose) sound or visualisation work together to support lasting change.

What a back care session looks like

Each session is paced to your energy and needs that day. Sessions are never about pushing through pain. Online sessions are carefully adapted so you feel supported and safe in your own space.

Sessions may include:

  • Gentle mobilisations to reduce stiffness and prepare the back safely
  • Supportive movements (chair- or floor-based) with props to restore ease and alignment
  • Targeted work for the lower back, mid-spine, and neck with breath awareness
  • Guided relaxation or rest to integrate changes and support the nervous system
  • Optional sound, mantra, or visualisation to ease tension and calm the mind

Your therapy practice is yours — we follow what your body needs and build a simple home sequence for steady, sustainable progress.

A supportive 6-session back care pathway

Back care often benefits from continuity rather than one-off sessions. I usually recommend beginning with a short series of six sessions.

  • Weekly sessions at the start to ease discomfort, understand movement patterns, and establish supportive foundations
  • A steady progression that builds confidence, mobility, and functional strength without strain
  • Monthly follow-up sessions (as needed) for integration, maintenance, and long-term support

This creates a gentle arc of change — practical, sustainable, and responsive to real life.

Benefits you may experience

  • Reduced pain and fewer flare-ups
  • Improved mobility and ease in daily movement
  • Better posture and steadier core support
  • A calmer nervous system and improved sleep or rest
  • Greater confidence in moving and trusting your body
